The territory of Estonia is a great plain with various umid zones and lakes, more than 1500 islands (the biggest are Sarema and Hiuma) and lots of rivers such as the Ema, that connects the Lake Vyrts to the Cudskoje Ozero, where it starts the Narva erupting into the Gulf near the homonimuous ancient port. The history of Estonia started with the first settlements of Sami (as you can read in this article) who had been followed along the ancient times by the Balts people and the Estonian tribe of Finns arrived around the IX century AD: they all lived free until the conquest of the Teutonic Order who formed the Deutsche Orden (1235 - 1346 AD) within the Reich Empire and involved Estonia into the history of european integration. Estonia has been dominated for centuries by near powers: annexed to the Lithuania-Poland Krone until 1669 AD, having expelled the Teutonic Knights, passed to the Kingdom of Sweden until 1795 AD when it was conquested by Russians.
Estonia became independent in 1919 AD as I Republic, founded after the fall of the Russian empire but was annexed again to Soviet Union in 1939 AD with the secret treaty Ribbentrop-Molotov until got definitive independence in 1991 AD with the II Repubblic, whose capital is in Tallin (the ancient Reval). When Estonia joined the European Union? It happened in 2002 AD with the adoption of the Euro coin.
