Its territory is pevalent montainous at the eastern end of the Alps, that separate the Sava and Drava river valleys both tributaries of the Danube river, and the beginning chain of Dinaric Alps from the Tricorno Mount in Istria region. The climate is continental with hot summers and cold winters, intense precipitations on the alpine valleys seat of famous skiing resorts.
The history of Slovenia started with the first settlements of Illyrians people (as you can read in this article) who lived free until the conquest of Romans in I century BC, after then within the reform of Augustus (see Roman Empire), Slovenia was included into the Dalmatia and Pannonia provinces that with the reform of Constantine I (see Christian Empire) became part of the Illyricum diocesi. That political situation was confirmed during the Byzantine Empire, despite the short annexion to Regna Ostrogotorum (from 476 to 553 AD) and even at the time of the invasion of Avars and Slavs in VI century AD. When Franks defeated them in 790 AD, Slovenia was included into the Regna Francorum as part of the Mark of Carinthya within the Carolingian Empire, passed to the Regna Germanorum from 843 AD cause of the division of the Verdun treaty and enfeoffed to the Babenberg dinasty. They also received the new Ducky of Carniola within the Reich Empire in 962 AD, successively ruled by the Habsburg dinasty until 1305 AD.
With the conquest of Magyars, Slovenia became part of the Kingdom of Hungary-Croatia-Slovenia until 1571 AD when it was annexed to Reich Empire and succeeding Austria-Hungary Empire from 1806 AD. When it dissolved at the of the First World War, Slovenia became part of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croatians and Slovenians and succeeding Kingdom and federal Republic of Yugoslavia in 1945 AD.
