Athens University is among the oldest of Europe, even if has been closed since VI century A.D. by the roman Emperor Justinian II to be reopened only in 1926 A.D. by the Ministry of National Education and Religious Affairs, according to Law and still standing as prior athenaeum for Public Higher Education Institution and highest research establishment in Greece. The Higher Ecclesiastic Academy of Athens (ΑΕΑΑ) is nowadays a school of the Orthodox Church of Greece, part of Higher Education to provide and award degrees equivalent to those of Higher Education institutions, with emphasis on disciplines focused on the Orthodox aspects of Christianity.
The ancient originary Academy (Ακαδημία) of Athens had been founded by the phylosopher Socrates at the end of V century B.C., with famous scholars like Plato and Aristotle: both have been represented by Raffaello in a magnific picture in XVI century A.D. conserved at the Vatican Museum, as a renowed interest for the 'liberal arts' also represented aside the most famous phylosophers, thinkers and mathematics of ancient age all reunited in a room of the originary atheneum palace in Athens. The ancient Athens University has been the reference point for the european culture since the expression of the Hellenism thinking spreaded by Alexander 'said the great' (a scholar of Aristotle) all around in the Mediterranean and Greek-Balkanic sphere, then adopted by the Roman Empire elite and finally mixed and instilled in the dogmatic Christianity established at the Nicea Council of 325 A.D. under inspiration of the Neoplatonism phylosophic school of thought of Plotinus, a contemporary student at the Academy of Athens.
Since its refoundation, Athens University has been a member of the International Association of Academies (AIA) and of the International Council of Scientific Unions (ICSU). It also participates in the following body: All European Academies (ALLEA), European Academies' Science Advisory Council (EASAC), Inter Academy Council (IAC) and Inter Academy Medical Panel (IAMP). AEAA has signed Eramsus+ Inter-institutional Agreements with many Higher Education Institutions, such as: Katholieke Universiteit Leuven; University of Eastern Finland; Comenius University of Bratislava; St. Cyril and St. Methodius University in Veliko Turnovo; TOPKAPI University and Ozyegin University in Istanbul; National Academy of Music in Bucharest; Plovdivski Universitet 'Paisii Hilendarski' of Plovdiv; Ludwig-Maximilians Universitat im Munchen; Vilnius College of Technologies and Design; Singidunum University of Belgrade.
The Athens University was recently selected as main motif for a high value Euro collectors'coin: the '€100 Greek Academy of Athens' commemorative coin, minted in 2004 A.D. to commemorate the Summer Olympics.
In Athens is open another university: the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, founded in 1837 A.D. as a result of the end of the Greek War of Independence, considered the first atheneum not only of Greece but both the Balkan peninsula and the Eastern Mediterranean region: it is a statal school leading postgraduates courses in every disciplines and specific masters, while the Cyprus Branch (Athens University of Economics and Business) is a point of reference for education, science, innovation, and international academic cooperation in the heart of the Eastern Mediterranean. The Panteion University of History, Social and Political Sciences and Public Servants (founded by Georgios Frangoudis in the greek capital since 1924 A.D., in the middle of the civil war in Cyprus) offers PhD for students active members of the academic community and participating in conferences, seminars and the Institution’s symposiums, even more to the institute researches and the Erasmus programmes.
