Erfurt University is among the oldest of Europe, even if had been closed in 1816 A.D., to be refounded in 1994 A.D. just after the reunion of Germany state. The former Alma Mater Erfordensis cause of its church founding privilege is considered the oldest german atheneum: however, the late medieval educational centre where Martin Luther had already completed his studies of 'Liberal Arts' was closed at the end of the Napoleonic epoch, even if its memory always remained alive and around 180 years were to pass before the university was re-founded.

The main steps of Erfurt University history pass through: the merging of collegiate and monastic schools in the Studium Generale (1293 A.D.); the municipal university is opened in 1392 A.D. and 4 years later the Archbishop of Mainz becomes its chancellor; from 1398 to 1417 A.D. the Statutes were firstly assigned to the Law School, the Faculty of Philosophy of Theology and of Medicine; Amplonius Ratingk de Berka donates his library with 635 volumes (1412 A.D.) and 20 years later the Collegium Amplonianum ('porta coeli') receives his deed of foundation; in 1436 A.D. the Collegium universitatis becomes the Collegium Maius, which went destroyed in 1510 A.D. during violent clashes between students and citizens of Erfurt; the Humanist circle meetings under Eobanus Hessus in the 'Engelsburg' (1516 A.D.), probably with the help of teachers coming from the academy of Constantinople; the Hammelburg Treaty between the Archbishop of Mainz and the City of Erfurt guarantees to Catholics and Protestants the practice of their faith (1530 A.D.); but during the Swedish occupation, the University of Erfurt is converted into a protestant academy (1632 A.D.) and 30 years later become the Kurmainzische Landesuniversität; the Collegium maius becomes the H.Q. of the atheneum (1681 A.D.); Erfurt University is closed by the King of Prussia in 1816 A.D..

At the end of a long period, in 1929 A.D. a Pedagogical Academy was founded in Erfurt, however it was closed again during the Thirties world economic crisis. In 1952 A.D the Catholic Church of Rome founded the Philosophical-Theological Studies, later became the Faculty of Catholic Theology of Erfurt University, while work began on one of the largest building projects in Erfurt's history: the campus on Nordhäuser Straße where the new atheneum located at the reopening. The year after was opened the Pedagogical Institute and in 1969 A.D. was ceremonially upgraded to the Pädagogische Hochschule 'Dr. Theodor Neubauer' Erfurt-Mühlhausen by Ministery of Education. The year following opened the Medical Academy, too. Times were mature when in 1987 A.D. the citizens of Erfurt, together with Aribert Janus Spiegler (an employee of the Medical Academy), founded the 'Old University of Erfurt' interest group with the aim of refounding the ancient Erfurt University: they published the appeal for a 'European University Erfurt' and had been able to win over not only the City of Erfurt but also federal politicians such as the Federal President. Finally in 1994 A.D. the law on the 'Reestablishment of the University of Erfurt and the dissolution of the Medical School' came into force and the renaissance of the traditional Alma Mater Erfordensis target of citizens become reality: under the motto 'Dare new things!' the refoundation of Erfurt University is sealed with ceremony in the Augustinerkloster.

The University of Erfurt thus combines centuries-old tradition with a lively present. The cityscape condensed the historic main building Collegium Maius in the old town and the modern campus on Nordhäuser Straße. The former home of the Erfurt Circle of Humanists also stands for the coexistence of yesterday and today: as the Studentenzentrum Engelsburg, it contributes significantly to the flair of the university city. In addition, Erfurt University is a true civic university, founded by the medieval City Council, on one hand, and by today's university society, on the other: the latter was founded in 1987 A.D. as the GDR citizens' movement, which not only initiated the re-foundation of the university but also gave important impetus to the peaceful revolution for the fall of the Berlin Wall.
