Pavia University is among the oldest of Europe being founded the first time in 825 A.D. and refounded in 1361 A.D.: in fact in early IX century A.D. the charolingian Emperor Lothair I's capitulary established in Pavia (capital of Regnum Italy for centuries) a school of rethoric for the kingdom's officials (as it was tradition of the ancient greek-roman schola), transformed in Studium Generale by Emperor Charles IV as a renowned legal and literary school that attracted students from all over Europe. Successively it was then expanded and renovated by the Duke of Milan, Gian Galeazzo Visconti (becoming the sole university of that state until the end of XIX century), who worked hardly to consolidate this institution and in 1389 A.D. obtained a permission from Pope Boniface IX to teach advanced theology courses.

Among the periods of greatest fame of the University of Pavia in the 18th century, there was the radical reform by emperors Maria Theresa and Joseph II of Habsburg: many famous professors contributed to its prestige, from the naturalist Lazzaro Spallanzani to the mathematician Gerolamo Cardano, universally known for his contributions to algebra and mechanics (the Cardan joint), from the mathematician Lorenzo Mascheroni to the physicist Alessandro Volta, who was a professor of Experimental Physics, Rector of the University and inventor of the electric battery, up to the physician Antonio Scarpa, initiator of modern surgery. Among the great masters of the Napoleonic epoch, there were Vincenzo Monti and Ugo Foscolo, who in 1809 A.D. delivered the famous lecture 'On the Origin and Duties of Literature' in Pavia, while many illustrious doctors emerged from the Pavia University in XIX century, such as Carlo Forlanini, inventor of pneumothorax for the treatment of pulmonary tuberculosis, and Camillo Golgi, Nobel Prize winner in Medicine in 1906 A.D.. Also 2 other professors from the University of Pavia have been awarded the Nobel Prize: the chemist Giulio Natta and the physicist Carlo Rubbia.
