476

476 A.D. is one of the most important date in the history of european integration and will probably have influence on the future of United europe, because the Roman Empire defintely collapsed in Pars Occidens and had been occupied by German peoples until nowadays! That event for scholars defines conventionally the end of the ancient times and the passage to Middle Age endured until 1492 A.D..

At the death of the emperor Honorius, the last of the Teodosian dinasty in the Western half of Empire, the provinces were progressively abandoned to military power, landowners and the Roman Church control under the rule of the Episcupus of Rome, not anymore the capital of the empire. Those regions were already inhabited by the originary European peoples but had been continuosly invaded, devastated or populated by various german tribes, who in some case obtained a permission for settlement (foedus) inside the limes by accepting to enter the limitary troops to front other barbarian invasions: as it was the most dangerous taken by the Huns in middle V century A.D. end concluted with the victory of Romans and hosted troops in the battle of Catalaunian Plains.

But it had been Just an illusory situation that could not enlast cause of weakness of the roman army and of the political institutions, so when Odoacer king of Heruli tribe of Goths invaded Italy did not find any resistance and arrived to Rome, where the Episcupus immediately welcomed him and made him obtain the title of Magister Militum et Rex Gentium Italiae by the Roman emperor survived in Constantinople. At that point, the dissolution of the statual roman power was completed and the civil and christian communities located in Imperium in Pars Occidens felt under military e political dominion of the βάρβαρος germans/goths troops, undifended and compelled by the "new comers" mostly arianist or pagans. But that desperate situation was fronted by the Roman clerical and landlord classes, belonging to the ancient Patriciate and interested in save their properties, privileges and jurisdictional status: so they found a deal with the military elite of invasors and the new age of history of european integration began.

The new epoch had been marked by the tentatives of ethnical-cultural fusion between the latin-christian people and the germanic-arianist one within the regna germanorum of Franks, Westgoths, Ostrogoths and Burgundians, letting start a new political model inspirated to the theocratic Dominato typical of the Christian empire founded by Constantine I, even if the 1st Council of Nicea had condamned the Arianism... That moment validated definitely the division of the Imperium established by the emperor Theodosius I in 395 A.D. and, later, the passage from the ancient classic public conception of the respublica romana to the privatistic and personal management forced by the cultural and civil uses of Germanic gentes. There had been the basis of the "Europe of nations" and of the european genealogies who ruled Europe until the firstworldwar!
