1707 A.D. is one of the most important date in whole history of european integration and will probably have influence on the future of United Europe because the foundation of the United Kingdom put and end to the long 'glorious revolution' and to the religious conflict started in XVI century A.D. with the Queen Elizabeth I.
The new state of Great Britain had been ruled by Anna (the last monarch of the Stuart dinasty) together with the Kingdom of Ireland since 1707 A.D.: with the 'Union Act' the Queen Anna accepted the deal subscribed by the english and the scottish parliaments, that had already agreed for only protestant kings since 1701 A.D. with the 'Act of settlement' to esclude any other catholic pretenders to the throne. Even included the half-brother of Anna, the Prince Jacob Francis Edward who tried for the last time to restore catholicism in England and was crowned for some months in 1745 A.D. as Jacob VIII, with the help of the catholic european powers of France and Spain. But, with this political institutional change, the ancient Britannia roman diocesis passed definitely to the protestant field both in Europe and the whole world and Great Britain became a global player in the international relations until nowadays!
What caused the act of union? There was still the fear for a catholic 'ordered' ascended the throne and interrupted the progressive process of union of England and Scotland, that had been enemies for centuries since the epoch of the Plantagenets dinasty and the declaration of independence in XIV century A.D. (that started the catholics Stuart ruling in Scotland), while England had became definitely protestant under the Tudor dinasty, who established the Anglican Church separated from the originary Roman Church, even within the Ecclesiae Christiana. After a long civil war and deep conflict inside the english society, during the epoch of the 'Succession Wars' that provoked continuous insability in Europe when the oldest european genealogies became extinct, while the Turks were assaulting Christianity at East (especially after the fall of Constantinople) so keeping in continue danger the Reich Empire, the act of Queen Anna gave stability to Great Britain forever and shifted its vital interests towards America and all colonies more than Europe.
She had been unlucky with her 17 children, all dead as babies for unknown reasons, so that Anna had not natural nor legitime heirs and the crown of the Great Britain passed to the king of Hannover, a german member of the ancient Welfen-Brunswick dinasty, who ascended the throne in 1714 A.D. and started a new english royal dinasty. Under Queen Anna the role and importance of the 'ministers' grew up as well as the power of military and Admiralty, controlled by the free masonry that became public under the Hanover dinasty as 'scottish rite' and 'York rite' still existing nowadays! Under the Anna rule had been issued the first 'Pound Sterling' coin used in the international tradings and to manage the asiento right on slavery from Africa and Asia. Since then the Great Britain became a fundamental player within the european scenario and the global international relationship, with a dominant position culminated in 1815 A.D..
